Daniel Defoe (/ˌdænjəl dɨˈfoʊ/; c. 1660 – 24 April 1731),^[1] born Daniel Foe, was an English trader, writer, journalist, pamphleteer and spy, now most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, as he helped to popularise the form in Britain and with others such as Samuel Richardson, is among the founders of the English novel. A prolific and versatile writer, he wrote more than five hundred books, pamphlets and journals on various topics (including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology and the supernatural). He was also a pioneer ofeconomic journalism.^[2]

몰 플랜더즈라고 알려진 한 여인의 파란만장한 일생의 연대기를 통해서 18세기초의 영국과 미국의 시대상과 그 속에 가난과 범죄에 시달리면서 자신의 인생을 찾아 나가는 한 이야기를 작가의 예리한 시선으로 그리고 있다. 

몰이라는 여인의 인생에서 종교는 그닥 중요한 요소가 아니다. 오히려 물질적 안정을 찾으려는 부단한 노력이 이 소설 전반에 걸쳐 나타나 보인다. 

이소설의 작자가 로빈슨 크루소의 작자라는 것을 생각하니 또 다른 느낌이 들기까지 한다. 인간이 인간적인 삶을 살기 위해서 기도 만큼 밥과 안식처가 얼마나 중요한지를 이 사람은 담담하게 때론 절절하게 보여 준다.
